Chelsea said they "expected" Ashley Cole to play again this season after a scan Thursday indicated the England left-back did not need a knee operation. Cole was taken off on a stretcher Wednesday after twisting his left knee during the 3-0 Premiership win over Blackburn at Stamford Bridge. In a statement, the Premiership champions said: "Ashley Cole had a scan today (Thursday) on his injured knee. It was confirmed that surgery was not necessary on the posterior cruciate ligament injury and so it is expected he will play again this season." Chelsea, currently second and six points behind leaders Manchester United, are away to London rivals Charlton on Saturday. The champions expect to have captain John Terry fit for this weekend's match. England centre-half Terry has been out since December 13 with a back injury that required surgery and his return to action was delayed further by a subsequent calf injury. Chelsea have struggled in Terry's absence and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admitted: "John Terry is an important player for us. We've missed him and he's been out for a long, long time. "It's important he's back, especially in a period when we keep losing players. We lose some players, we then gain some players and it's important he's available." |
